Where Science Meets Art

  An Exhibition in late 2009 by artists Isla Griffin. Isla has a strong background in anatomy from the perspective of a fully trained physiotherapist. Her work reflected her deep knowledge and love of the human form in a truly original way. Isla will be exhibiting in London in 2010.

  An example of my own work, Warren Bonett. I am a printmaker. I focus primarily on etchings. This particular piece represents an early use of the photogravure technique. After the painstaking image work by hand, using collage and a computer, the image is transferred to a transparency and through the use of a double exposure technique a negative of the image is made on a metal plate. This is then carefully inked by hand and a print is pulled. The piece is called Gothic Remnant.

  Our interest in art and science led us to an art movement known as steampunk, which was in part derived from a work of fiction called The Difference Engine by Bruce Sterling and William Gibson. The piece of work seen here is a limited edition collectors item produced by the special effects house behind Lord of Rings, Avatar and DIstrict 9, WETA. They are beautifully crafted and witty constructions of fictional weapons from an age of Victorian Futurism.

  Author Stephen Dando-Collins speaking about his book Pasteur's Gambit the day after winning the Queensland Premier's Award for best science book for 2009. Stephen demonstrates very well the idea of pulling ideas from various sources to come up with something new and original. His normal area of writing is Roman history, but whilst researching something else the idea for this fabulous book grew from chance bit of information found.

  Picture he is one of the authors, Stephanie Haslam of a locally produced book on native Grasses to the region. The book is a superb example of locals working together to produce an excellent and highly functional publication.

  Environmental scientist and author Dr Nicola Markus framed by the books in our art section provided an amazing talk at the nonfiction literary event called Reality Bites. After the 90 minute session Dr Markus joined 24 of the audience members to continue the discussion at lunch at the Thai restaurant next door to us. Her book, On Our Watch was one of our best sellers in 2009, and everybody who came wants her to return for another talks as soon as possible.
